Modern Times for PEI !!!
Here is what I mean by a wringer washer. I’m sure when these first came out housewives across PEI rejoiced. What technology !! Just don’t get your hand caught between those rollers when wringing the water outof the clothes.
Today we heard 4 more presentations on topics such as car ferries, the Spanish Flu, the Mi’kmaq(post Confederation) and the “Break” – a piece about how modernization came to the Island bringing with it things like indoor plumbing, electricity, consolidated schools and modern technology -ie. the wringer washer.
We worked on final projects in the library. Tomorrow is Coffee Shop (our last) and the rest of the class will be dedicated to project work.
Tuesday, January 20/09
Here is the link to the handout for our final exam. I am out tomorrow so you will have a day to do project work. See you all Thursday. Feel free to email any questions.

Greatest Islander ???
There are many individuals who would qualify for the Greatest Islander Award. Hopefully you have chosen a good candidate and are preparing to convince the rest of us that your choice is best. You should have 3 reasons why you think this candidate is deserving. There will be a prize of course for the Greatest Promoter of the Greatest Islander … it could be you!!
Continue to piece together your Family History. I am looking forward to these.
Today we had our Coffee Shop ( & frozen doughnuts!!). Last one is next Friday. Keep your eyes peeled on the news all week so you are well prepared. We also did PEI Trivia and Melanie, Jessica & Brittany were our winners today. Prize for you gals Monday too!!

More work on our Family History /Greatest Islander Projects today.I have been giving you lots of class time to work on these as some resources can only be found here in our library. Some of you are making great progress. Remember, I am available at noon, after school for any extra help. Just ask!!
Tomorrow is Friday – Coffee Shop. Be ready with your news.

Today was quiz day. I hope everyone did well. For those of you not present, a note is REQUIRED to explain your legitimate absence. You will be expected to write the quiz tomorrow (or first day you are back in school.)
Reminders of work to be done on Family History and Greatest Islander poster. Keep at it. If there is a storm tomorrow you have lots to do. And remember, I am available in the library to help you during the day or after school.
See you tomorrow ( or possibly Thursday).

Family Tree …
Sorry to be late with my post today … technical difficulties. Today we spent some time reviewing for our QUIZ tomorrow. Iexpect you will all be reviewing tonight. Use your review sheet. Remember to be familiar with the School Development Plan.
We worked on either Family History or Greatest Islander for the remainder of the period. These are your focus projects for the next two weeks. You should be working hard on these. Choose your Islander if you have not yet done so.
QUIZ tomorrow.
Friday, January 9/09
Another week down. Today was Coffee Shop … we had lots of news to discuss. School closures were at the top of the list. Be sure to be familiar with this issue … you will be responsible for knowing it for your quiz next Tuesday.
We skipped our Trivia today to spend time on Family History. Some of you are making progress finding information. Be working on this every day. Please see me with any questions. I am willing to help outside of class – any time.
I gave you a review sheet for your quiz next Tuesday. We will review this on Monday and we will have you start your presentations on Monday. I have your notes ready on overhead for you to use.
Have a great weekend … stay warm!!!

Fate of our small schools ??????????
That is the question on everyone’s mind today. We will know in a matter of hours what our proposed school system will look like. I want you to be aware of this issue and read up on it. Think about the impact and be prepared to respond to it with your thoughts/ ideas.
Today we watched a video on the Charlottetown Conference and I gave you the questions I expect you to know on the Island and Confederation. Keep working away on your Family History. I showed you another good example of a project today and we looked at where you should go to find census information online. I still REQUIRE pedigree sheets from many of you.
Tomorrow I am out … I am leaving you an activity to work on. We will take the next chapter of the light green text and “jigsaw” it. That means everyone will be responsible for a section to work on and present. You must read, research and prepare an overhead whereby you will teach the rest of us about your topic. These should be ready to roll for Friday.
Choose your Greatest Islander if you haven’t already done so.

Beaconsfield House … a symbol of the “Golden Age of Sail” on PEI.
First of all, Happy NewYear!! I hope you all had an excellent Christmas holiday and a good break from the grind. Back to work however. January will go by very fast – time to buckle down and get to work. I gave you important dates for the remainder of the semester. I must have been looking at an old calendar as I see there are a couple of dates off. Here is the revised list:
QUIZ – Tuesday, Jan 13
COFFEE SHOP FRIDAYS – Jan 9, 16 & 23
FAMILY HISTORY – Monday Jan 26
FINAL: Quiz & Greatest Islander Poster Project – date TBA(passed in during final)
Today we reviwed the Shipbuilding Industry on PEI - an economic “Golden Age” for PEI. I gave you review questions and we read about wealthy shipbuilder/owner James Peake – his rise and fall. His life is a metaphor for the industry really. His lavish mansion, Beaconsfield, is symbolic of the wealth shipbuilding brought but his tragic end also symbolizes the fall of the industry. Can you think of a good comparsion with successful Island industries of modern times? What happens if everyone stops eating potatoes?????? Lobster???? Or heaven forbid, loses interest in Anne!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A reminder to bring in pedigree sheets tomorrow.
