Paul Kropp’s Avalanche …

Above is the book Avalanche. Today we did a Readers’ Theatre based on this book. You all did a great job with your parts and I think we came to the conclusion that practice improves our reading. We reviewed the Before Reading Strategies we have been working on … PURPOSE, PREVIEW & PREDICT. Next week we will begin to look at During Reading Strategies. We finished our day today by working on an exercise where we had to add prefixes and suffixes to  root words so the word made sense in a sentence. Have a great weekend!

The power of an avalanche …

Today we corrected the vocabulary exercise we did for Powder Freaks. Students did a good job and we discussed how it is important to look for clues in the sentence to help us understand the meaning of the word. We then did an Anticipation Guide. This is another before reading strategy that helps us think about the text before we read it. We finished up with our independent reading.

Wednesday, Feb 18/09

This morning some students attended a presentation from UPEI on the ACE program. Those who did not attend had extra independent reading time. We also did a very short introductory reading assessment. Tomorrow we will work with an Anticipation Guide.

Back country skiing …

Today in Literacy Resource 701 we continued to work with the article Powder Freaks. Yesterday we did a Before Reading Strategy - PREVIEWING. You looked at the article – read the title, looked at the pictures, read the captions. From there we discussed what we thought the article would be about and thought of some questions we had about it. Today, we actually read the article and a lot of our predictions we right! We were able to answer our questions as well. You also worked on a vocabulary sheet – words taken from the article. Finally, you read your independent novels and did a journal entry. Great work!
